About Us

Pratham Mumbai Education Initiative

Pratham started in Mumbai in 1994 with the vision and mission of “Every Child in School and Learning Well”. In the early years, Pratham’s area of work was Mumbai; now it is spread across India. Initially, Pratham catered exclusively to children in urban areas, but now works on a large scale in rural areas across India. From being a service delivery organization, Pratham has evolved to be an innovator of methods of large-scale delivery. To support the growth and needs of the rural and urban programs, the continuous development of teaching-learning approaches, methods and materials as well as training are continuous ongoing activities.

Pratham Council For Vulnerable Children

Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children (PCVC) serves as the Child Rights and Protection wing of Pratham, established in the year 2000, with the aim of “Every Child’s Rights Protected, Every Child in School and Learning Well.” Initially PCVC started as an outreach program in the urban slum communities of Mumbai, responding to the needs of children belonging to underserved communities emphasising on a specific segment of out of school and working children. Today, PCVC has grown from being an organization focused on working with child labourers, to a Rights-based and Resource organization, working on protection and safeguarding rights of children.

PCVC's JOURNEY

While working at the grassroots level of Mumbai, many working children were observed who had migrated from other states, majority of whom were without family. With PCVC’s continuous intervention with these children, a pattern of interstate movement was identified, where children leave their home states (source) to find work in metro cities (destination). As a result of the increasing trend of unsafe migration among children, PCVC expanded its work in other states, at both source and destination in order to curb the issue of child labour and unsafe migration/ trafficking. Major sending states identified were Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Children from here, travel to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. As a result, PCVC intervention cut across these states addressing the issues of child labour, exploitation and unsafe migration/ trafficking.

PCVC has strong presence in seven states of the country – Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh; working extensively at both source and destination, covering around 2,00,000 marginalized children (e.g. working children, street children, abused children, etc.) annually in urban and rural areas through direct and indirect interventions. Over the years, PCVC has become increasingly influential in the political scene vis-à-vis Child Rights Protection and has contributed to important improvements in legislation and policies. Other activities include being a nodal agency for Childline 1098 in certain States, collaboration with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan initiatives, working closely with the Labour, Social Welfare, Education, and Police Departments to eradicate child labour and working with stakeholders to strengthen implementation of the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) across India. PCVC aspires towards creating a society where every child is educated, free from exploitation and protected.
